The Doerian is a tropical, green-yellow-brown "punk" fruit from Indonesia and Malaysia as big as a rugby ball full of dangerous spikes. Inside, it is like a large tangerine segment. The texture is a bit meaty, but it disintegrates in your mouth like a creamy, fatty, firm, unctuous pudding. The taste is sweet, fresh and tingling like a light sparkling wine. The taste is reminiscent of banana, which is slightly fermenting, others recognise almond, sometimes onion and garlic. But the Durian is best known for its pungent smell. The riper it is, the stronger it is. And it differs per variety.
Did you know that..
You can suck the doerian out of its fist or use it in ice cream, desserts, smoothies, etc. From a whole fruit you have about 15% to 30% flesh left. You can keep the segments for another day or two, of course airtight in the refrigerator (you'll probably want to throw away the container afterwards). Freezing can also be done, in fact the fruits are always imported frozen. The seeds can't be eaten raw, but roasted they seem to be tasty..
